Emergency steering: finding the tiller isn't enough — you have to fit it once, on the water
Why a spare tiller in the locker doesn't count as a working steering system, what actually gets in the way of fitting it, and how to run an hour-long check before a passage.
Almost every yacht has an emergency tiller. Almost no one has ever fitted it.
The gap between "we have one" and "we know how to steer with it" shows up at the one moment it's inconvenient to discover it — when the main steering has failed, and that usually happens in a blow, because that's when the loads are highest.
The RYA's safety guidance for yachts and motorboats is direct about it: before an offshore passage, the emergency steering should be rigged and tested, not just located. The 2026–2027 World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations require a proven means of steering if the rudder fails.
Why "it's in the locker" doesn't count
Here's what usually turns up on the first attempt.
You can't reach the rudder stock. The stock head is boxed in behind the aft cabin, a locker, a mattress, or furniture that has to come apart. In calm conditions that's twenty minutes. In a storm, it doesn't happen at all.
The tiller doesn't fit the socket. Over years at the dock, the socket cover gets painted over, sealed with caulk, or lost. Or the tiller flexes the wrong way.
The primary steering won't disengage. On cable and hydraulic systems, the wheel has to be disconnected, or the tiller ends up fighting the whole steering gear and becomes almost impossible to use. How to disconnect it is written in a manual that usually isn't on board.
The tiller is too short. Small lever arm, huge load, one person can hold it for fifteen minutes. A passage needs watches on that tiller, which means you need tackles.
No one but the owner knows where it is. If the owner is out with an injury, the crew ends up searching the whole boat for it.
An hour-long check, once a season
Do this at the dock or in calm water.
- Get the tiller out and time it. More than five minutes is already a problem — sort out the access.
- Open the rudder stock socket. The cover should open by hand, no tools, no dismantling furniture.
- Fit the tiller and check the swing from side to side. It shouldn't foul on anything.
- Disengage the primary steering per the manual. Confirm you know how, and that it can be done in the dark.
- Get underway and steer with it for at least half an hour. Include turns in both directions and at different speeds.
- Let every crew member take a turn steering. That's the whole point of the exercise.
What you'll learn on the water and won't learn at the dock
- Real speed. Under emergency tiller the yacht is slower: load rises with speed, and at full speed it can't be held. You need to know your own ceiling in advance.
- Whether you need tackles. Most yachts don't have a long enough lever arm, and without tackles run through blocks to winches, holding a course for more than half an hour isn't possible.
- How the boat behaves under sail. It often turns out to be easier to balance the boat on sail trim and nudge the tiller occasionally than to fight it directly.
- Whether the helmsman can be heard. They're sitting at the stern, back to everything, and without an agreed set of commands no one will understand a thing.
What to stow next to the tiller
- A short instruction card in plain language, laminated — where the cover is, what to open it with, how to disengage the wheel, where the tackles are.
- Any tool actually needed — right there, not in the general toolbox.
- Two tackles with blocks of the right length.
- A spare pin and pintle for mounting the tiller.
A separate note on hydraulic failure
If the steering is hydraulic, the failure is usually not the rudder itself but the circuit: fluid loss, air in the system, a failed pump. In that case the order is different: check the fluid level and look for a leak first, and only then fit the tiller.
Keep a reserve of the correct hydraulic fluid on board. This is one of those cases where half a litre of fluid cancels the entire emergency procedure.
What to record if you need a part
Emergency tillers and socket covers aren't universal — the square size on the rudder stock head is specific to each builder.
- The stock head, with a ruler in the shot — the size and shape of the fitting matters.
- The socket cover, top and bottom.
- The boat's builder's plate: yard, model, year — this often leads to the factory part.
- The whole steering gear assembly, to understand how the wheel disengages.
With this set, a tiller, cover, and gear repair kit can all be sourced, even if the builder is long gone.
In short
Finding the tiller isn't the same as knowing how to steer with it. Once a season, get it out, fit it, disengage the wheel, and steer with it for half an hour, letting everyone take a turn. An hour in calm water heads off the panic on the one day this tiller is actually on board for.
