Carbon Monoxide Aboard: The Danger Starts at the Dock, Not Underway

Where it collects, why slow speed is more dangerous than full throttle, how to tell poisoning from seasickness, and what to do in the first minutes. A review based on investigation reports.

Carbon monoxide kills people on boats that are in good working order. Not old ones, not poorly maintained ones — ordinary boats, at the dock, in fine weather, when everything seems normal.

It has no color and no smell, and its first symptoms are indistinguishable from fatigue, motion, or a mild hangover. That's exactly why people don't leave the danger zone: it just feels like seasickness.

Where it collects

Counter to expectation, the most dangerous spots are not the engine room.

A cockpit under a closed enclosure. In one incident reviewed by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch, exhaust collected precisely under the closed cockpit enclosure and poisoned the people inside. The canvas that protects against wind and spray also turns the cockpit into an enclosed space.

The aft deck at slow speed. This is the station-wagon effect at work: at slow speed and idle, exhaust doesn't blow clear astern — it gets drawn back over the transom and rises onto the swim platform. According to CDC guidance for boat operators, carbon monoxide at slow speed and idle can accumulate in the cabin, cockpit, bridge, and aft deck.

From the boat next door. A neighboring boat with its generator running can poison your cabin through an open hatch. This is the most frustrating case, because everything on your own boat is switched off.

Why slow speed is more dangerous than full throttle

This is the key thing to remember, and it runs against common sense.

At full throttle, the airflow carries exhaust back and up, and it disperses. At slow speed, idle, and at rest there's no airflow: the gas stays with the boat and finds its way into any recess or enclosed space.

The consequence follows from this: the most dangerous conditions are sitting at the dock, drifting, running in reverse, and moving slowly under an enclosure. In other words, exactly what feels safe.

How it looks in a person

In order of progression:

  • headache, heaviness at the back of the head;
  • nausea, fatigue, drowsiness;
  • dizziness, confusion, ringing in the ears;
  • loss of coordination, loss of consciousness.

The sign that tells poisoning apart from seasickness: several people feel unwell at the same time, and they feel better in fresh air. Seasickness doesn't clear up in five minutes in fresh air; poisoning does.

If a person feels unwell and the dog is listless, that's a signal too. Animals are smaller and react sooner.

What to do in the first minutes

  1. Get everyone into fresh air. Don't stop to work out the cause — get people out first.
  2. Shut down the engine and generator.
  3. Open everything that opens, and create a cross-breeze.
  4. Count everyone. In a confused state, a person can be left below.
  5. Call for help if there's loss of consciousness, vomiting, or confusion. Carbon monoxide poisoning is treated with oxygen, and the sooner the better.

Don't let the affected person "lie down and rest it off" in the cabin. That's the worst thing you can do.

The detector: the only thing that warns you in advance

Smell is useless here, and how you feel is misleading. A carbon monoxide detector is the only way to learn about the danger before you start feeling unwell.

Three things that matter:

  • The detector must be marine-rated, not a household one from a hardware store. A marine unit is built to handle vibration, humidity, and motion.
  • Install it in sleeping quarters, not the engine room: it's meant to warn people, not monitor the engine.
  • Detectors have a service life, usually five to seven years, printed on the housing. An expired detector stays silent when it needs to scream. Check the date on yours right now.

The test button on the housing only checks the alarm sound, not the sensitivity. That's not the same thing.

What to check on the boat

  • The entire exhaust path: hoses, clamps, the exhaust bellows, the water lift muffler. A burned-through or cracked exhaust lets gas into the hull.
  • Rubber exhaust connections — they stiffen and crack just like everything else aboard.
  • The exhaust outlet's position relative to hatches and the swim platform.
  • Cabin ventilation with the enclosure closed. If the enclosure closes up tight, you have no ventilation.
  • Running the generator with hatches closed — this must not be done.

What to remove if you need a part

Exhaust components are matched by size and to the specific engine — "roughly this kind" of hose won't do here.

  • The engine and generator nameplate, in close-uphow to read and remove it.
  • The removed section of exhaust next to a ruler, from both sides.
  • The hose's inner diameter, measured with calipers.
  • The full installation area, so the angles and layout are clear.

With this set, the hose, the water lift muffler, and the bellows can all be matched, even on a boat that's twenty years old.

In short

The danger isn't full throttle or the engine room — it's sitting at the dock, slow speed, and a closed enclosure. If several people feel unwell at the same time and improve in fresh air, that's poisoning, not seasickness. Put a marine detector in the sleeping quarters and check the date on it: an expired one stays silent exactly when it should be screaming.
