Seacocks and Through-Hull Fittings: What to Check and When to Replace

The one fitting on board whose failure sinks a boat at the dock. How to check it, what a green deposit on bronze means, and why tapered plugs should hang nearby.

A boat sinks more often at the dock than in a storm. And almost always through an opening below the waterline: a burst hose, a disintegrated valve, a cracked through-hull fitting.

This is the one system where "it'll make it to next season" is a bad idea. Let's go over what to check and when to replace it.

What a Through-Hull Consists Of

Three parts, and any of them can turn out to be the weak point.

  • Through-hull fitting — a tube through the hull, with a nut on the inside.
  • Seacock — the valve itself. Can be a ball valve (quarter-turn lever) or a tapered valve.
  • Hose and clamps — from the valve to the fixture it serves.

A beginner's mistake is to check the valve and leave the hose alone. Either one sinks a boat just as effectively.

What to Check and How Often

Every Trip

Walk through and look at every seacock. There are usually between four and ten of them: engine, head (two), sinks, cockpit drain, speed log, depth sounder, air conditioning. You need to know where all of them are by heart — looking for them with a flashlight in the dark is too late.

Once a Month While Afloat

Turn every valve all the way and back. Ball seacocks fail precisely because they sit in one position for years and seize up. If it turns stiffly, that's already a warning sign.

Feel along the hoses their full length, especially near the clamps and at the bends. If it's gone stiff, cracked, or bulging, it needs replacing.

Look at the clamps. Stainless steel only, and only with a fully banded housing. A galvanized clamp in the bilge turns to rust in a single season.

Once a Season, on Haul-Out

Inspect the fittings inside and out. Bronze dezincifies over time: the brass loses its zinc, leaving porous copper behind. The sign is a pinkish-copper or greenish-white, crumbly deposit, and a dull sound when tapped instead of a ringing one. A fitting like that breaks by hand. That's a death sentence: replace it.

Check the bonding, if the boat's design calls for it.

Replace the head's consumable parts — that's usually where leaks start.

What to Replace and When

  • Hoses — based on condition, typically every five to seven years. Only reinforced hose rated for raw water. Garden hose or fuel hose won't do.
  • Clamps — with every hose replacement, two per connection below the waterline.
  • Ball seacocks — when they start turning stiffly and lubrication doesn't help.
  • Bronze fittings — at the first sign of dezincification, without hesitation.
  • Gaskets and seals — together with the fitting.

Separately: don't mix different metals. A bronze valve on a stainless fitting forms a galvanic pair that eats itself away within a couple of seasons.

Plugs

Every safety manual says the same thing, and this is one case where it's said correctly: a wooden tapered plug should hang at every through-hull, tied right there on a lanyard.

It costs next to nothing. It gets hammered into a burst fitting in ten seconds. It saves the boat.

Check that the plug's diameter actually fits that particular opening, not just "roughly." And that it's in place, not in the toolbox under everything else.

If It's Leaking Right Now

  1. Find where it's coming from. Trace the water upstream: the bilge, then the nearest through-hulls.
  2. Close the seacock. If the valve won't turn, hammer in the plug.
  3. Turn on the pump and check whether it's keeping up. If it isn't, call for help instead of investigating further.
  4. Only then look for the cause.

What to Take Down, if You Need a Replacement

Through-hull fittings are rarely "universal": what matters is the diameter, thread type, fitting length, and hull thickness at that spot.

  • The removed part next to a ruler, from both sides.
  • A close-up of the thread — it's what determines the type and pitch.
  • The installation spot from the inside, to understand the layout.
  • The boat's builder's plate, or its model and year — they often reveal what was fitted at the factory.

With this set of information, even something long gone from catalogs can be matched: through-hull fittings come in a long range of sizes, and a compatible part is almost always out there.

Turning every valve and feeling every hose once a month — fifteen minutes that are worth more than any other maintenance task on board. And the plugs. The plugs need to be hanging there.
